…And Jesus and His disciples came to the coast of Caesarea Philippi; He asked His disciples “Who do men say that I the son of man am”?   After a series of comparisons, Peter stepped up to say that “Jesus is the Christ, the son of the living God.” Upon Peter’s declaration, Jesus declared that His church would be built and the gates of hell would not prevail against it.  Convinced and confidently convicted in the year of 1988, Pastor Roosevelt Mason Sr., and a few faithful members obeying the Spirit of God stepped out on faith and the Greater Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church was born.

At the start of the ministry, worship services were held at the Marrero Housing Authority and Bible Study at Pastor Mason’s home.  Within the same year, the church moved services to 1429 Mansfield St., where they stayed for two years.  By 1990, the ministry had purchased a house in the Lincolnshire Subdivision, with the intent to convert it into a sanctuary; however, the members saw that the house was unsuitable and sold it.  Believing God for another facility, a committee was formed for the purpose of finding land to build a new place of worship.  Four years later, the church purchased 4 lots on Sayres Dr., and built our current sanctuary.

By 1998, the church was completed and ministering to the surrounding community.  In 2001, God called Pastor Mason home from labor to reward, after which time the church went into prayer for new leadership.  By January 2002, God had answered their prayer and Elder Terry Gullage, Sr., was selected to continue the work God started.

Since 2002, the ministry has experienced tremendous progress.  It has grown from approximately 20 members to well over 500 and over 30 in house ministries.  With the steady growth in membership, the church set out to purchase land for a new sanctuary.  In 2004, the ministry purchased 3.52 acres, less than a mile from the present site.  Since the purchase of the property, an official ground breaking took place in 2006, for development of the new sanctuary, which will be known as the “Power Center”.

Experiencing such a powerful move of God in the ministry, Pastor Gullage, being led by the Holy Spirit, went before the Trustee Ministry to consider amending the name of the ministry.  After prayerful consideration, in 2007, the ministry name was amended to Greater Mount Calvary Church.  The name amendment reflects no limits by denominational walls.

In 2006, with the rapid growth in members and the expansion of two worship services, the ministry grew from volunteer and part-time staff to day to day operations of two full time employees and over 15 part time and volunteer staff members.

The ministry continues to impact the community through evangelistic outreach, worship services and weekly bible studies.  All praise and honor go to the Almighty God because of His miraculous work. The church is motivated and determined to carry out its mission to reach and teach, and minister to the needs of God's people. Acts 1:8 declares "but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth". God is using Greater Mount Calvary as His witness to this generation, for we are truly a Fellowship of Believers-Believing Jesus Christ, One Faith-One Family- One Focus.
